While visiting George Town, we stayed in Old Penang Guesthouse on Love Lane (RM360 for 4 nights). The building is old and authentic, which makes it charming, but it also means you can hear nearly every footstep. The walls seem to be made of paper and the wooden floor creaks if you don’t walk about gently. We aren’t light sleepers though, so overall the charming part prevailed.

Our private room in Old Penang Guesthouse in George Town had an airconditioning system with a remote, a clothes rack and a bed. That’s basically everything you need, in our opinion. There is a shared bathroom with soap dispensers on both floors, the upper one being kind of outside but with a roof, and the lower one blessed with a rain shower. Bathrooms were very neat, cleaned every day. When you need fresh towels or want your room cleaned, you can just ask at the reception. Normally they’re supposed to clean it every two days, but they ask for your permission. The WiFi connection is quite good in the common room, but in our bedroom it sucked. A light breakfast of toast (with butter and/or jam), fruit, coffee, tea and water is included. They only ask you to do your dishes yourself, but that’s a small effort.

Upon arrival in Old Penang Guesthouse (we took a cab from the airport), we got a warm welcome and a free map of George Town, complete with some explanations and tips about where to eat. Unfortunately we lost it on day one, but luckily Brecht has a good memory. You can find our own tips about where to eat in George Town in our next blogpost.

Overall we were satisfied with our stay in Old Penang Guesthouse in George Town. We really liked George Town as a city, we loved the food, the wandering and the atmosphere. The beautiful street art makes walking through the city almost like a scavenger hunt, you don’t want to miss out on even one of the mural paintings. It is quite the challenge, as you keep discovering them on places you’ve already passed, and it seems we missed out on a lot of them. All the more reason to go back!
