Traveling is a lot of fun but can be expensive as well. To find out exactly how much we spent during our round the world trip we painstakingly keep track of all of our travel expenses and analyse them for you. In this post: our travel expenses in New Zealand.

New Zealand is quite literally on the other side of the world for us, so we were very excited to explore this country. Anyone who’s been can probably agree that it’s an amazing country. Unfortunately it’s on the expensive side as well. We spent 30 days in New Zealand and spent $5,647.51 (€5,082.76) in total or $94.13 (€84.71) per person per day.

Take note that the dollar amounts mentioned here are US Dollars, not New Zealand Dollars. The conversion we used can be found in the sidebar.

Average Spending Per Person Per Day

Only the very last night of our New Zealand trip was spent in a hotel. The rest of our 30 day stay we had a Spaceships campervan to call home. The $14.92 for accommodation are for the campsites we parked at. Just like in Australia we only stayed at powered sites and campsites with a kitchen, toilets and showers. There are a lot of opportunities for free camping in New Zealand but you need to be self-contained (read: have a toilet on board) for that.

Since we were working on the road we tried to stay at campsites that offered WiFi as well. That often meant paying extra for a handful of MBs of slow internet connection. Combined with the mobile data we used in between that totalled up to $2.27 per person per day, just to stay connected. Not the biggest cost, but still surprising for a developed country like NZ.

The second largest piece of the pie is the $21.96 for activities. Queenstown is to blame for a huge part of that. But we don’t regret our (expensive) first bungy jump at all! Can’t visit the adventure capital of the world without a few adrenaline rushes, right?!

Average Spending PPPD for Transportation

Our most expensive category was transportation. The main reason for that was the rent of our Spaceships Beta 2S campervan. This set us back $1,208.33 for a 29 day rental, all-in insurance included.

We drove our Spaceship from Christchurch to Auckland over 3,202 miles (5,153 km). This cost us $732.10 in fuel. We also had to cough up about $157 to take our campervan (and ourselves) from the South to the North Island on the Bluebridge Ferry.

Average Spending PPPD for Food & Drinks

Just like in Australia we kept our food expenses down by cooking our own meals in the campsite kitchens. But we did also discover a few places worth eating out at in New Zealand.

At $94.13 per person per day, the travel expenses in New Zealand were definitely our highest so far. It’s such an incredible country however that we happily spent all of that money and would do it again in a heartbeat. We can’t wait to explore more of the beautiful nature on both islands and get a few more adrenaline rushes in Queenstown.

Definitely put New Zealand on top of your bucket list if it isn’t on there already!
