Bangkok is an important hub for people flying to Southeast Asia. For lots of travellers it’s the starting point of their trip, but a fair amount of passengers are temporarily stranded there as well during a (long) layover. Either way, it’s important to know how to get from the airport to Bangkok city.
There are 2 international airports in Bangkok: Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) and Don Mueang International Airport (DMK). Make sure you know which one you’ll be at! In this post we’ll explain how to get from either airport to Bangkok city.
How to get from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Bangkok city?
Suvarnabhumi Airport, otherwise known as BKK, is one of the biggest airports in Southeast Asia, both in size and number of passengers. The airport is situated east of Bangkok and easily accessible through public transport.
Public Transport from BKK to Bangkok
The City Link (or Airport Rail Link, they can’t seem to decide on the name) takes you from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Phaya Thai Station in 30 minutes. Buy a token from one of the ticket machines for 45 baht per person (~ $1.44 ~ €1.15) one way.
In Phaya Thai Station you can transfer to the Skytrain (BTS) to further explore Bangkok. Prices are at most 15 baht per stop (~ $0.48 ~ €0.38). Check out our post about getting around in Bangkok for more information on the fares and passes.
Taxi from BKK to Bangkok
Taking a taxi from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Bangkok is another option. Follow the signs to the Airport Taxi Service, where you’ll be assigned a taxi on a first come first served base.
The price charged will depend on the distance, but please keep in mind that you’ll have to pay an extra 50 baht (~ $1.60 ~ €1.28) airport surcharge. When the taxi uses a toll way, you’ll be asked to pay that fee as well.
To give you an idea: we paid 535 baht (~ $17.08 ~ €13.71) to get from Suvarnabhumi Airport to BB House near Khao San Road.
Taking a taxi from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Bangkok isn’t necessarily faster than taking public transport, as traffic can be pretty crazy in Bangkok.
Accommodation near Suvarnabhumi Airport

How to get from Don Mueang International Airport to Bangkok city?
Don Mueang International Airport, or DMK, is the other international airport in Bangkok. Considerably less international passengers go through DMK compared to BKK, but over 11 million still do so every year. Unfortunately Don Mueang is not as easily accessible through public transport as Suvarnabhumi, its significantly younger brother.
Public Transport from DMK to Bangkok
There’s no City Link connecting Don Mueang International Airport to Bangkok. You can take one of the airport busses (A1 or A2) to Mo Chit Station, where you can transfer to the Skytrain (BTS) or Underground (MRT) to continue throughout Bangkok.
We’ve been told the bus ride costs 30 baht (~ $0.96 ~ €0.77) and will take somewhere between 30 minutes and an hour. Prices are at most 15 baht per stop (~ $0.48 ~ €0.38) for both the Skytrain (BTS) and Underground (MRT). Taxi from DMK to Bangkok
Of course you can also take a taxi from Don Mueang International Airport to Bangkok. Follow the signs to the Airport Taxi Service, where you’ll be assigned a taxi on a first come first served base. It does tend to get pretty busy here!
The price charged will depend on the distance, but please keep in mind that you’ll have to pay an extra 50 baht (~ $1.60 ~ €1.28) airport surcharge. When the taxi uses a toll way, you’ll be asked to pay that fee as well.
To give you an idea: we paid 250 baht (~ $7.98 ~ €6.41) to get from Don Mueang International Airport to T-Boutique Hostel near Hua Lamphong train station.
As the public transport connecting the airport to Bangkok city isn’t as great as at Suvarnabhumi, taking a taxi might be the better option in this case.
